Australia: Helen Haines remains critical as police investigate vehicle incident
Albanese confirms hospital treatment, surgery and a suspect in custody. He describes a deliberate act, but the motive remains unknown.

Independent federal MP Helen Haines remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on 19 October 2026. In officially published remarks on 20 October, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed she had been airlifted to Melbourne and undergone surgery.
What the government has confirmed
According to Albanese, a suspect is in custody. Victoria Police is leading the investigation, with the Australian Federal Police and intelligence agency ASIO participating through the joint counter-terrorism team.
In his News24 interview, the prime minister described the incident as a deliberate act, based on the available reports. He added, however, that the motive was unclear and deferred to the police investigation for further details.
What has not been determined
The involvement of counter-terrorism agencies does not itself establish that an act of terrorism occurred. Nor does the prime minister's assessment replace evidence of a specific motive or a court's determination of the suspect's responsibility.
ERT reports that the driver is 43 and that no charges had been announced by Tuesday morning's update in Australia. This describes that point in time, not the final outcome of the case.
The substantive update is confirmation of her critical condition following surgery and of the agencies involved in the investigation. No established motive has been announced in the official statements reviewed.
