Chapped lips: simple care without scrubbing or overdoing it
Dermatologists’ advice for cold days, including when to stop using a product.

Cold, dry air can aggravate lips. Frequent licking may feel soothing briefly but can make dryness worse.
A gentler routine
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a non-irritating lip product several times a day and before bed. For very dry lips it suggests a thick ointment such as white petroleum jelly. Stop using a product that burns, stings or feels uncomfortable instead of assuming that means it is working.
Avoid picking at flaky skin or repeatedly scrubbing the area. Before going outdoors, use a suitable lip product with SPF 30 or higher and reapply as directed. Winter cold does not remove the need for sun protection.
When to seek help
If dryness persists despite basic care for two to three weeks, see a dermatologist. Sores that do not heal need assessment. Weather is not always the cause.
