Switzerland and China sign updated trade agreement
The official announcement also records labour-cooperation and research agreements. It does not specify an entry-into-force date or new tariff schedules.

The Swiss government announced the signing of an updated free trade agreement with China on 30 October 2026. The ceremony followed talks between President Guy Parmelin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with both present.
The updated contractual framework
The revision concerns the bilateral agreement established in 2014. According to the Swiss announcement, it aims to improve access for Swiss goods and investments to the Chinese market and strengthens environmental and labour provisions through a binding chapter on trade and sustainable development. These are the government’s description of the agreement, rather than already measured economic results.
An associated agreement on labour and employment cooperation was also signed. A separate agreement concerns the framework for cross-border exchange of research data, aiming to provide greater legal certainty for cooperation between scientists in the two countries.
Signing and implementation are separate stages
The announcement establishes that the agreements were signed. It does not give an entry-into-force date, detailed new tariff schedules or confirmation that all required approval procedures have been completed. It therefore does not establish an immediate tariff change for a particular product.
Businesses need the final applicable text and relevant customs guidance before changing cost calculations or transaction terms.
