Elections as soon as possible were recommended by Giannis Vroutsis to new federation president Angelos Papanikolaou and board members at their meeting on 26 October 2026. The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports’ complete release confirms a recommendation respecting federation autonomy, rather than an imposed election decision.
According to the same announcement, the federation president said the transitional administration would lead the organisation to elections within a reasonable period and promptly send a timetable to the ministry. No specific election date is published in the release.
The minister clarified that grants to the federation alone remain suspended until management audits are completed, except for unavoidable operating expenses such as payroll. Basketball clubs continue to receive grants, according to the announcement.
The stated aim is to continue competitions and national-team commitments. Administrative pledges and financial audits are separate from the judicial investigation of allegations; they do not establish guilt.

Updated 26.10.2026 · 00:11, Athens time — What changed
In a new statement dated 25 October 2026, the reconstituted Hellenic Basketball Federation (HBF) board said its 26 October meeting would take decisions concerning the people involved. This is a scheduled step, not a published outcome of that meeting.
On refereeing, the board aims to develop specific proposals by 15 November 2026 with ESAKE and the relevant ministry, and says it will request FIBA’s assistance. The statement does not itself establish new refereeing rules.
The board also commits to convening a General Assembly within a reasonable period after the national teams’ November fixtures, without setting a date. It prioritises continuity of competitions and cooperation with competent authorities. These are commitments by the administration; the statement is neither a judicial finding nor evidence of guilt.
The preceding update identifying Angelos Papanikolaou as the new president and listing the board’s officers remains in the history.

Angelos Papanikolaou is the new president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, according to its official announcement of 25 October 2026 setting out the new board. The federation confirms that the restructuring followed today’s extraordinary meeting, after the Liolios resignation statement reported in the earlier update.
Michail Melis becomes first vice-president, Konstantinos Zompanakis second vice-president and Lambros Takis general secretary. Elissavet Chatziangeli–Fasoura is treasurer.
HBF says a further announcement will cover the new board’s first decisions. The published membership therefore does not itself establish additional decisions about competitions or funding. The administrative change is separate from the judicial proceedings and is not a finding of guilt.
