Food vouchers: street-market use planned
The ministry describes transactions confirmed by a one-time code. No redemption launch or specific payment day has been announced.

Updated 17 October 2026, 12:15 Athens time — What changed: the ministry adds street markets to the planned redemption network.
Its 17 October release describes confirmation through a code sent to the beneficiary’s phone and entry of receipt details by the vendor. It provides no activation date or final list of participating stalls. It does not establish that vouchers can already be used.
Domna Michailidou announced a target for the first payment under the new food-assistance system before Christmas on 16 October 2026, according to the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family. This is the ministry’s plan, not a fixed payment calendar.
The release cites an average monthly voucher value of about €60 and an expectation that the first payment could reach €1,000 because of backdating. These figures do not establish a uniform amount for every beneficiary or a €1,000 monthly allowance.
From pre-packed distributions to choosing products
Under the model described by the ministry, beneficiaries would choose food and basic material-assistance items from participating shops instead of receiving predetermined distributions. The announcement envisages €400 million in European resources over the next two years.
The information followed a meeting with the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE) about small and medium-sized retailers’ participation. The ministry says ESEE will inform its members; that does not confirm every local shop already accepts the vouchers.
What this particular release does not settle
It provides no specific payment day, detailed table of amounts by household or new application procedure for citizens. Exact entitlements, terms and activation require the relevant official instruments and guidance. The announcement should not be read as a payment already available or an application process already open.
