Posiva announced on 22 October 2026 that Finland’s government had granted it a licence for the spent nuclear fuel encapsulation and final disposal facility at Olkiluoto. It describes this as the first such licence worldwide.

Licensing does not mean final disposal starts immediately. The company says commissioning tests and inspections remain, requiring verification and approval by STUK.

No exact start-up timetable was provided. The announcement concerns spent fuel from owner companies TVO and Fortum.
