Giorgos Vardinogiannis, Panathinaikos’ “Captain”, dies aged 90
He died on 16 October. The football club and amateur sports association confirmed the loss of the man who led the football club for 21 years.

Giorgos Vardinogiannis died on Friday 16 October 2026, aged 90. Official statements from Panathinaikos FC and Panathinaikos Athletic Club confirm his death, which was also reported by ERT.
Known as the “Captain”, he became president of the football club in 1979 and remained until 2000. The club records six league championships, nine Greek Cups and three Super Cups during that period.
His record in Greece and Europe
During his presidency, Panathinaikos reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1984–85 and the Champions League semi-finals in 1995–96. The football club also highlights the development of its youth academy during those years.
He was born on 7 April 1936 in Episkopi, Rethymno, and pursued a career in the merchant marine and shipping. Panathinaikos Athletic Club notes that he served two terms on the board of the Union of Greek Shipowners.
Both organisations offered condolences to his family and loved ones. Their assessments of his contribution form part of their tributes, rather than an independent evaluation of his entire business career.
