Updated 19.10.2026 · 03:04, Athens time — What changed:

In its written update of 18 October 2026 at 13:45 local time, Wichita Police state that the 34-year-old driver was released with no charges filed, following interviews and consultation with prosecutors. Toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the vehicle remain pending. The investigation is active, not concluded with a finding clearing her.

Clarifying the toll

The death toll remains two. The new statement distinguishes ten people with noncritical injuries from an additional woman taken to hospital for a medical problem unrelated to traumatic injury. Thus, eleven hospital transfers do not mean eleven injured people, as reported in the earlier update. No intent or definitive cause is attributed.

Earlier update — 18 October 2026, 06:09, Athens time

Updated 18 October 2026, 06:09 Athens time — What changed: the newer police tally of 11 injured people from the 17 October incident at Stryker Sports Complex has been added. ERTnews, citing AMNA and Reuters, reports that five are children aged 5–9 and that the injured were taken to hospital. The death toll remains two.

KWCH also reports 11 injured people, attributing the number to police. These are newer details from spokesperson Aaron Moses’s briefing, not a figure added to the written municipal announcement, which still confirms two deaths without a detailed injury count.

It remains unclear whether the act was deliberate. The number injured does not in itself establish a cause or motive, and unverified descriptions of their condition are not repeated.

Earlier reporting — 18 October, 04:09 Athens time

An adult and a child were killed when a truck entered a field during a soccer game at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, 17 October 2026. The city confirms both deaths in writing and says other casualties were taken to hospitals.

ERTnews, citing Reuters and police, reports that the driver is in custody. Being in custody is not a judicial finding about responsibility or motive.

What the official update says

In the announcement posted on the municipal website on 17 October, police describe the investigation as active. The written update confirms that both deaths were established at the scene, without a detailed count of injured people.

In a newer report at 8:05 p.m. local time —4:05 a.m. on 18 October in Athens— local station KWCH attributes to police the information that those killed were a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson. These are newer details from the report and are not included in the written municipal announcement.

The circumstances remain under investigation

Police spokesperson Aaron Moses said at the initial briefing, as reported by KWCH, that there was no additional ongoing threat from the driver. The vehicle’s route onto the field and its speed were still being investigated.

Police are asking anyone with relevant video to submit it through the dedicated evidence-collection portal linked by the city. The available written announcements do not establish whether the act was deliberate, and no motive is attributed.
