Leipzig/Halle: investigation into airport perimeter breach
Police confirm fence damage and closure of the north runway. The south runway continues operating; this does not establish a complete airport shutdown.

German police are investigating a security incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport after damage to its perimeter fence was discovered late on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Leipzig Police Directorate said the north runway was closed, while operations on the south runway continued.
The official bulletin issued at 02:14 German local time on 18 October says the damage was found shortly before 23:00 the previous day. Federal police, supported by state police, searched the premises.
Newer reporting and limits of confirmation
Reuters, in an accessible morning report via TimesLIVE, says a vehicle appeared to have driven through the fence. It also reports that initial searches found no suspicious objects or unauthorised people and that further checks were planned for Sunday.
The possible involvement of a vehicle remains under investigation. The sources checked do not establish an attack, motive or connection to a foreign country. Closure of the north runway alone does not mean that all flights were cancelled; passengers need flight-specific updates from their airline or the airport.
