Small balcony: an autumn corner for everyday coffee
Light, a few pots and comfortable seating can organise the space without filling it.

A small balcony can become a place for morning coffee or reading. Start with how you want to use it and keep the path from the door to the seat clear.
Measure before choosing furniture
Record dimensions and the door opening. A folding table and a genuinely comfortable seat may be enough. Choose outdoor materials and store textiles dry when the weather turns.
Plants for your conditions
Observe sunshine and wind before choosing plants. The Royal Horticultural Society identifies both as major constraints on balconies. Ask a nursery about species suitable for your local climate and choose a few pots with good drainage.
Water still matters in autumn
An overhang can prevent rain reaching your balcony. Check the soil before watering and keep drains clear. RHS notes that container plants need year-round care; the season does not replace checking actual conditions.
Atmosphere and careful placement
An outdoor-rated light and an easily stored blanket add character. Secure objects against wind and avoid precarious placement on railings. Heavy containers or structures require a qualified engineer to check permitted loading.
