Next Generation 112 upgrade completed: what changes in emergency communication
The new system combines multiple communication channels, uses location data and strengthens accessibility. No date was announced for full public activation of every capability.

Greece's Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced on 5 October 2026 that the technology upgrade for the “Upgrade/Integration of New 112 Technologies – Next Generation 112 (NG 112)” project had been completed. Information Society SA implemented the project, financed through the NSRF under the AIGIS programme.
What the new system adds
According to the official announcement, the new infrastructure can combine multiple communication channels for people in danger, use location data and provide critical information to 112 operators.
The design aims to enable a faster and more accurate response. The announcement, however, describes the intended operational benefit and does not yet provide an independent measurement of response times after the upgrade.
Interoperability with emergency services
Next Generation 112 provides for information exchange between the 112 centre and the responsible emergency services. The objective is to give the agencies involved a more consistent operational picture and timely access to the information needed to manage an incident.
Accessible communication
The announcement specifically refers to people who cannot hear, speak or use conventional communication. It does not yet specify which exact methods or formats will be available in every situation.
What has not yet been clarified
Although the ministry says the technology upgrade has been completed, it did not publish a detailed list of new channels, a date for full operational activation of every capability for the public, or new usage instructions for citizens.
Until official operational guidance is issued, the new capabilities should not automatically be assumed to be available in the same way in every emergency. People facing an emergency should continue to follow the current official instructions for contacting 112.
