Updated 13.10.2026 · 13:56 Athens time — What changed

The gradual delivery of the first SMS messages containing electronic referrals for free breast-cancer screening began on 13 October. The Greek Ministry of Health has now confirmed that the service launched as scheduled.

The new cycle covers 2,385,935 insured and uninsured women aged 45–74. The age criteria and number of eligible women were not included in the information available when this article was previously updated.

How to book

Women who have activated paperless prescribing receive the referral by SMS. Those who have not can use proliptikes.gov.gr to find participating centres and book a free appointment using only their AMKA number.

The service covers a digital mammogram and, when clinically indicated, a breast ultrasound.

What has not been announced

The 13 October release does not state how long each new referral remains valid or give a separate start date for the next cardiovascular-screening cycle. Appointment details are those shown on the official platform and by participating centres.

Results reported for the first cycle

The ministry says 1,267,026 women had digital mammograms in the first cycle, 87,231 had findings requiring further investigation, and more than 6,000 were diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. These figures are the Ministry of Health's programme assessment.
