French authorities announced the first documented detection of Shamonda virus in a human on 22 October 2026. The severely immunocompromised patient was receiving hospital treatment in Lyon for a serious illness and died in early October.

What remains under investigation

The infection has been documented, but investigations continue. The announcement describes a link between the virus and the patient’s neurological complications as very likely, without presenting a completed investigation. A bite from a Culicoides midge in eastern France is the transmission hypothesis being examined.

Shamonda is transmitted to animals by these insects and was detected on European livestock farms in summer 2026. The newly reported human case does not establish widespread transmission.

The authorities’ assessment

According to the joint statement from France’s health and agriculture ministries, no health risk to the general population has been identified so far, based on available knowledge. This is the assessment at the current stage, while clinical, laboratory and epidemiological investigations continue. The World Health Organization and ECDC have been notified.
