Calm breathing: a small pause during stress
A simple exercise without forcing the breath can fit into a daily routine.

During a demanding day, a short pause creates space to notice breathing. The NHS describes a gentle technique that can be practised sitting, standing or lying down.
Find a comfortable position and allow the breath to move as deeply as feels comfortable without forcing it. The NHS suggests gently breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.
If helpful, count slowly to five while inhaling and again while exhaling, without insisting on reaching that number. The guidance suggests practising for at least five minutes and repeating regularly.
This is a tool for managing tension. When stress regularly makes daily life difficult, the NHS recommends professional support. A pause does not replace assessment or treatment that may be needed.
