Chornobyl: UK pledges £17 million for repairs to the protective shelter
The new 15 October funding commitment covers confinement and ventilation. It is not a report of a new attack or confirmed radiation release.

The UK government announced £17 million for repairs at Chornobyl on 15 October 2026. Reuters also reported the new commitment.
The money will support restoration of the shelter’s confinement and ventilation functions. Britain’s contribution forms part of an international programme coordinated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), alongside Ukraine and G7 donors.
Which damage is being repaired
The EBRD describes damage caused by a Russian drone on 14 February 2025. The large steel arch covers the remains of Reactor Four and enables the safe dismantling of the original sarcophagus.
The bank warns that corrosion threatens the structure’s lifespan unless its functions are restored. It also says that plant monitoring showed radiation levels remained within acceptable limits after the strike.
What is confirmed now
The new development is a funding commitment, not completed repairs. The announcement gives no disbursement or completion date for these particular works. It does not report a new strike or a new radiation release.
