A magnitude 6.3 earthquake was recorded at 07:20 Greek local time on 20 October 2026, in the South Pacific, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The latest reviewed record places the epicentre 197 kilometres northwest of Port-Olry, at a depth of 16 km. The same event is timed 04:20 UTC in the international record.

The latest solution and the initial bulletin

The 16 km depth comes from the newer USGS solution, replacing the 10 km included in early reports. Seismic parameters can be revised as more data become available.

What the tsunami bulletin says

The National Tsunami Warning Center issued an information statement at 04:31 UTC. Using an initial magnitude estimate of 6.6, it says a tsunami is not expected and there is no danger for the US West Coast, British Columbia and Alaska.

That is the bulletin's specific geographical scope; it is not presented as local guidance for Vanuatu. The seismic record is also not a tally of casualties or damage. Such information requires confirmation by the competent local authorities.
