The first 10 kilometres of the new northern Crete road’s Neapoli–Agios Nikolaos section opened to traffic on 29 October 2026, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

This is a specific operational milestone, not completion of the entire northern Crete road. The full Neapoli–Agios Nikolaos public works section is about 14.5 km long and construction continues.

What the overall design includes

The project upgrades the existing road to a motorway with two lanes and a hard shoulder in each direction, separated carriageways and road-safety infrastructure. Its full design includes three interchanges, service roads and engineering structures; these are not all presented as already delivered in today’s partial opening.

The ministry also describes parallel safety works on the existing route. Political assessments of their effect on accidents do not replace an independent statistical evaluation. The confirmed new milestone today is the opening of these first kilometres.
